David Bulega a senior anaesthetic officer in Gulu regional referral
hospital (GRRH) was arrested by police from the
hospital for allegedly possessing medicines believed to have been
stolen from the hospital.

David during the time of his arrest denied stealing the medicines, he
says he have no idea where the drugs have be gotten from. He said his
bag found with the stole drugs where brought by her a woman identified
as Judith Komakech to the hospital after washing. The accused said the
matter was sabotage and defamation of his name because he does not
even have a clinic and have no idea to steal drugs from the hospital.
He added that it is unfortunate that stolen drugs where instead packed
in his bag without his consent.

Peter Omoding the security personel at GRRH as instructed by the
hospital administrators to check all staff bags, he hinted to check
the doctor`s bag that the girl was carrying and consequently found 20
injection medicines hidden under clothes in the bag.
He added that he immediately reported the case to the hospital
administrator who summoned Judith and detained the bag.

Paska Apio deputy director GRRH says she was informed that the matter
was being handled by the administrator and she never took interest
into verifying whether the drugs were stolen by David or the cleaner.

She however says drug theft have been rampant in the hospital
suspected by cleaners or doctors using cleaners to take the drugs out
of the hospital. Dr. Paska added that they hinted to close every
outlet from the hospital due increase drug lost as constantly reported
by in charges in the hospital.

She said they also have noted rapid finishing of drugs but patients
keep complaining that they do not get drugs.

Paska however attributed the drug theft to low wages received by the cleaners, she say the cleaners are paid shilling 40.000 only monthly a factor that may drag them into stealing to cater for their needs.

She said administration however give support like soaps and sugar
monthly to the staffs but that cannot be enough for their needs. She
appealed a salary increment be considered to reduce the vise. She said
suspects were arrested and sent to police.

James Asubu OCCID Gulu central police said they received the
information and rushed to the scene. He said David was questioned over
the recovered stolen drugs but accuses the cleaner who is still at
large.
